Lib Dem Councillor Anna Berent has been named Older Persons Champion in Islington.
Anna, who turned 80 last week, celebrated her birthday in the Town Hall before going to New York.
She has been a councillor for Mildmay since 2002 but has been involved in the local community organising the St Pauls Shrubbery for 15 years. In 1997 she started campaigning for the regeneration of Newington Green, last year she finally saw the culmination of eight years hard work when the regenerated Green was reopened.
In her new role Anna will be championing the causes of Older People all over Islington.
Anna said;
"I've had such fun: and it's been really rewarding being a councillor, and as long as it continues to be fun I hope I'll keep doing it! It's important that Older People are represented on the council, and in Islington. They can often feel like the forgotten group especially in such a young borough. But doing this certainly keeps me young at heart.
"Seeing the Green regenerated after all those years was a real high point for me. I still get a soppy grin whenever I see children using the new playground."
Her ward Colleague Councillor Rhodri Jamieson-Ball, the youngest member of the Lib Dem Group, said
"Anna is an inspiration to all of us. It's amazing being out and about in the ward with her. I struggle to keep up!"
