Twelve Leaseholders on the Highbury Quadrant estate will be £1000 better off as a result of a review of the bills for under pinning works to a number of blocks on the estate, thanks to action taken by their Lib Dem councillors.
The underpinning works resulted in bills of £8000 each leaseholder, which should have been covered by the Council's Building insurance, but due to an oversight, was not. The council initially agreed to pay for most of the works (£7,000 each) but asked Leaseholders to pay the excess of £1000.
However, Highbury East's Lib Dem Councillors have now stepped in, and as a result of concerns express by the Councillors Laura Willoughby, Terry Stacy and John Gilbert, the Council will now cover the extra £1000, not the Leaseholders.
Cllr John Gilbert said "I am delighted that the council has reviewed this case and that it will now be covering the full cost of underpinning works to these blocks. This case shows that the Council has listened to the concerns and worries of Leaseholders regarding the conflicting information they received about these works. We'll be working to make sure something like this doesn't happen again.
"As a council, we need to be responsive to Leaseholders concerns, as the Government's rules leave Leaseholders lumbered with big bills far too often as it is."
