Lucy Watt and Paula Belford Campaigning to help local shops
Islington Council's Executive Committee this week received a report proposing a raft of actions to help local shops.
The report, entitled Helping Local Shops, proposes:
• Establishing a Business Support Unit as a single point of contact for businesses contacting the Council
• The Council should publicise more widely schemes which already exist and which could help local businesses
• A consultation group on parking and how it affects business should be established
• Build support for local shops into local planning rules (the Local Development Plan)
• Create a local retail strategy to help local shops
Chair of the Sustainability Review Committee which wrote the report, Cllr Lucy Watt (Lib Dem, Canonbury) said:
"Local shops are a vital part of our communities - and we want to give them as much support as possible.
"The Council can do a lot to help local shops and other businesses, and the measures we are proposing tonight will help to do that.
"In compiling this report, many shopkeepers told us that creating a single point of contact for them with the Council would help them a lot. So I am very pleased we are recommending this.
"We're also proposing to give shops better protection in planning rules - and also create a permanent forum for discussing issues around parking with them.
"Shopkeepers have a wealth of knowledge, looking out for the wellbeing of their customers and being the eyes and ears in the fight against crime and anti-social behaviour.
"They do a lot to support our community, and the Liberal Democrats are helping shopkeepers. "
