Lib Dems take action to tackle ASB on our streets
Liberal Democrat councillors at executive this week welcomed measures proposed in a report entitled 'Preventing Anti-Social Behaviour'.
The report looks at the whole range of anti-social behaviour and recognises the wide range of different projects already going on in Islington to tackle it - and goes on to propose further ways the Council can work with the police and others to stamp it out.
The report proposes:
• We should make it as easy as possible for the public to report Anti-Social Behaviour - including directly through Contact Islington - 7527 2000
• The anti-social behaviour team should work with the police to track the actions of particular individuals over time and across the borough
• The Council should continue to work with the police to apply for an ASBO (Anti-Social Behaviour Order) where appropriate, or an ABC (Acceptable Behaviour Contract) where that will work better
• Making better use of the new mobile CCTV vans in Anti-Social Behaviour hotspots
• Byelaws relating to local parks and open spaces should be reviewed
• The design of new buildings and open areas should be reviewed to make Anti-Social Behaviour as difficult as possible
Cllr Lucy Watt, Chair of the Sustainability Review Committee, said
"Anti-Social Behaviour can make people's lives a misery and the Liberal Democrats are determined to do everything we can to stamp it out.
"These proposals will make it more difficult to behave anti-socially - and make it easier for the police and the Council to tackle it when it does happen.
"We want to make it as easy as possible to report it. And we will make the best use of CCTV to locate it.
"And once we know about it we have a wide range of weapons to tackle it with - and will use the most effective in each case. We use about the same number of ASBOs as most other London boroughs, but there are other effective methods too, such as our ABC pluses which try to solve the cause of the problem.
"We found that anti social behaviour is not just young people hanging around and that young people are victims too. There are other kinds of anti social behaviour, such as dog fouling, and we want to use byelaws to stamp that out too.
"Behaving anti-socially limits the freedom of others - so Liberal Democrats are proud to do whatever we can to tackle it."
