Liberal Democrat councillors have today welcomed Cllr Richard Heseltine's announcement that he is re-joining the Liberal Democrats.
Cllr Heseltine announced at last night (28th March)'s Full Council meeting that he was sitting with the Liberal Democrats because he planned to support them in the coming local elections and was re-joining the party.
Richard Heseltine sat as a Liberal Democrat councillor, and was re-elected as a Lib Dem at the last local elections in 2002, until becoming an Independent in autumn 2002.
He has said that he particularly recognises that the Council is far better managed now than in the past - and also the action that the Lib Dems have taken to ensure that the Council's financial position is much more robust.
Cllr James Kempton, Deputy Leader of the Council and like Cllr Heseltine a councillor for St Mary's ward said
"Richard has always supported the Liberal Democrats' agenda for improving Islington and the Council, and I'm delighted to welcome him back. He represented the Lib Dems and the SDP in Islington through the dark days of mis-rule by Labour, and so I'm glad that he's now back with us as we go into what we hope will be our most successful elections ever.
"The Liberal Democrats have a clear vision for how we want to make Islington a greener, better and safer place to live, and give residents even better value for money over the next four years - and I am glad to know that it has increasingly wide support."
