Islington's Liberal Democrats today launch their pledges for the 2006 local elections.
Islington Liberal Democrats have a strong record of delivering what they have pledged at previous elections.
Ensuring value for money has been an important part of the Lib Dems' approach at the Town Hall - and they are again pledging if re-elected to keep Council Tax below the London average.
The Lib Dems are also strongly committed to protecting and improving Islington's parks - so they are pledging they will create more greenspace in the borough.
They will help to challenge young people's energy into positive activity - through a programme of providing free swimming lessons in school holidays for young people.
They are also committed to giving young people a helping hand while they are in school, by promising that every single one of Islington's secondary schools will either be completely rebuilt or very substantially refurbished .
Councillor Steve Hitchins, Leader of the Council, said "The Liberal Democrats have a strong track record of delivering on our past pledges, so by voting for us residents can be confident we will deliver these.
"We want to make Islington a cleaner, greener and safer place to live - and ensure the Council itself gives residents the best possible value for money. These steps will help achieve that in many different ways - and help achieve our vision for One Islington.
"Last year the Audit Commission said we were the fastest improving Council in the country. Residents have seen the improvements and know that's true - and now we are have ambitious plans to make it even better. "
Tracey Ismail, who has lived in Islington for 9 years and is standing for the Council for the Liberal Democrats for the first time this year (in St George's ward), said
"The Liberal Democrats have made a huge improvement to Islington since they first took control in 2000. These are great ideas for improving it further - and even more, for giving power back to local people to make their own decisions.
"The Lib Dems' One Islington vision is an exciting plan for making this a better place, and I am proud to have the chance to support it by standing as a candidate."
If re-elected the Lib Dems will help motorists, by promising to freeze the cost of a residents parking permit.
And they are taking real action to help the many leaseholders who face very large bills for improvements to their homes, as a result of the major improvements the Council is investing in.
They will also help those who can't even get on to the housing ladder in Islington by promising to ensure that at least 4,000 new homes are built in Islington over the next four years.
