Bridget Fox and the Liberal Democrats: reducing Islington's carbon footprint
Islington Liberal Democrats are doing their bit to combat climate change by approving the council's Sustainability Action Plan 2006-10 at Thursday's (16th March) meeting of the Executive.
The plan sets out a range of actions to continue to make the council and the borough greener and to begin to tackle climate change today and for the future. It includes policies such as increasing the amount of greenspace, promoting car-free living, increasing the use of renewable energy, as well as a strong overall vision of how the Council's leadership can make Islington a leading example in protecting the environment and combating climate change.
This programme is in sharp contrast to Islington Labour's lack of commitment to the green agenda, following their attempt to remove the 'Dark Green' strategy from the Council's Budget at the Full Council Meeting on 23rd February.
Cllr Bridget Fox, Executive Member for Sustainability, says: "This is not just another action plan. Climate change is the greatest threat the world faces today, and local authorities have a key role to play in combating it. Islington has made a lot of progress in the last few years, but there's still a lot more to be done by all of us, and the Sustainability Action Plan is crucial to making sure that happens."
The plan includes a programme of high profile actions including a carbon reduction commitment, a Zero Waste Strategy, the introduction of Whole Life Costing for council activities and developing a Sustainable Living Centre.
