Islington Lib Dems tonight revealed plans to invest an extra £1million on CCTV.
The extra £1million investment was announced as an amendment at the Executive meeting before the budget council meeting.
Liberal Democrat Councillor Jyoti Vaja, Executive Member for Community Safety said
"We are committed to tackling crime and the fear of crime. CCTV when used properly can be an effective tool to help catch criminals and can make people feel safer.
"But CCTV is not a stand alone measure and more money is being invested in making our estates safer, stopping anti-social behaviour, improving lighting and of course getting local policemen on the beat in the community."
The extra investment in tackling crime is being made without adding a penny to residents council tax thanks to improvements in managing the council's finances.
The extra money for CCTV is a direct response to residents' responses to the budget survey.
Islington Lib Dems carried out a full investigation into the costs and benefits of using CCTV in 2004-5. (Labour's member of the committee did not attend any of the meetings.) They are now putting forward a motion proposing the party's policy on CCTV at the national party conference in Harrogate on 4th March.
