Hackney Council Slammed for Lorry Ban Abuse

January 21, 2006 12:00 AM

Highbury East Liberal Democrat Councillor Terry Stacy has slammed Labour controlled Hackney for the abuse of the Riverdale Road Lorry Ban. The Islington councillor has stepped in after receiving a string of complaints from residents of Riversdale Road and the surrounding streets about Hackney contractors and refuse vehicles ignoring the ban.

Cllr Stacy said

"Residents are getting sick and tired of this abuse: one resident recently stopped a Hackney vehicle to point out the area's lorry ban, only to be told very rudely to "sod off". This is just not on"

He was supported by his fellow Liberal Democrat Councillor Laura Willoughby who said

"This is not the first time we have had to ask the Mayor of Hackney to act. Only eighteen months ago we had to write to him and ask him to take action, after that there was a improvement, but Hackney are back to their old tricks"

The Lorry Ban was introduced, with Hackney Council's support, in 2004 and covers a number of roads in Highbury Including Riversdale Road, Mountgrove and Highbury Quadrant. In 2003 the area was also declared a 20mph Zone after a massive yes vote by residents who had major concerns about road safety in the area.
