Highbury East Liberal Democrat Councillors Terry Stacy and Laura Willoughby have had a major victory in their battle to stop two road closures in Highbury being abused by inconsiderate drivers.
The closures situated at the junctions of Horsell Road & Ronalds and at Arvon Road & Ronalds Road have been the subject of abuse over the years resulting a string of complaints from residents to the Council.
Terry & Laura presented a petition to the Council in December 2005 from concerned residents urging the Council to act.
As a result £10,000 was agreed by the East Area Community after lobbing by Terry & Laura to fund additional measures to stop this abuse, work on these measures started this week.
Cllr Stacy said:
"Action speaks loader then words, we listened to residents and acted upon their concerns"
Cllr Willoughby said:
"We were not going to stand by and watch this abuse continue, why should residents have to suffer because of inconsiderate drivers"
They were supported by local resident Richard Lucraft of Witherington Road who said:
"I am delighted to say that work on the improved street barriers has started. And I have already seen drivers who commonly drove over the barriers turning away from them! We feel safer already."
"Many thanks to you and Laura for your help on this. I will also be sending a note of thanks to the officers concerned. Not everything should be a complaint!"
