Liberal Democrat Councillor Laura Willoughby (Highbury East, Executive Member for Communities) today received an M.B.E. from His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales at Buckingham Palace.
The award, which was announced in The Queen's Birthday Honours list in June, recognises Laura's service to the community in Islington and across Greater London.
Laura, 31, has been an Islington councillor since 1998 and has served as Executive Member for regeneration, culture, sport, libraries, equalities and voluntary organisations since 2002. She chaired the Local Government Association's equalities executive from 2002 to 2004 and is Vice-Chair of the Association of London Government Culture Steering Group as well as being the ALG Liberal Democrat lead spokesperson on the 2012 Olympic Games.
She is believed to be one of the youngest ever non-sports people to receive an award from The Queen.
Fellow Highbury East Councillor Terry Stacy (Liberal Democrat, Executive Member for Performance) said: "We should all be proud of Laura's achievement. She is a remarkable young woman who makes a magnificent contribution to the Borough."
Laura commented: "This is a tremendous honour, not only for me but also for the countless Council staff members, voluntary organisations and local people who work together to make Islington a special place to live and work."
