SLOW DOWN FOR ROAD SAFETY WEEK

November 9, 2005 10:28 AM

Local Lib Dem campaigner, Bridget Fox, has endorsed Road Safety Week, organised each November by national charity Brake.

The theme for Road Safety Week 2005 is WATCH OUT! THERE'S A KID ABOUT aiming to raise awareness about children's safety on the roads.

Bridget Fox says, "Here in Islington we take road safety - particularly for children - very seriously. We have introduced 20 mph zones in many residential areas set up safe routes to schools - we also offer road safety and cycle safety courses to hundreds of Islington school kids. I'm proud that while accident rates nationally are rising, here in Islington we have seen accidents fall by 20%. But each road death is one too many. Our children are our future and it's right that we take care to keep them safe."

  • Traffic is the biggest killer of 12-16 year-olds in Britain. Last year, deaths of 12-19 year-olds on foot rose by 26% from the previous year (from 87 in 2002 to 110 in 2003).
  • A key part of Brake's Watch out! campaign is encouraging drivers to slow down, especially around schools and in residential areas. If a child on foot is hit by a vehicle travelling at 35mph, they are more than twice as likely to die than if they were hit at 30mph. Staying well within speed limits is therefore essential for the safety of children who are walking and cycling.
  • Brake will also be encouraging schools to get involved in Road Safety Week to help teach road safety to children.
