The number of people needing an appointment to deal with problems with their housing benefit claim has fallen from 416 per month in 2002 to just 14 a month now. The Liberal Democrats' decision to sack incompetent previous housing benefit contractor ITNet saw a massive fall in the number of people who visited Islington's front shop on Essex Road to deal with housing benefit claims.
Advice about housing benefit will now be available from Contact Islington - where residents can also access other council services, such as council tax queries - and Area Housing Offices.
Councillor Jyoti Vaja, Executive Member for Housing said
"We have made a huge difference to the housing benefit service. Labour had employed ITNet, but the service they were delivering was totally inadequate. We sacked them and made it a council service and saw immediate results.
"We have seen a huge and positive change after getting rid of ITNet and now the number of people who need a face to face appointment to deal with their housing benefit has fallen dramatically.
"Housing benefit is accessed by some of our most vulnerable residents, so it is important that it is dealt with properly. Under ITNet residents had difficulty getting the most basic service.
"Now with the move to Contact Islington residents will be able to access all council services in one place."
