Islington's Lib Dem Council's plans to reach five times the recycling rate Labour managed is outlined in a report to the Executive committee tonight.
A huge range of new recycling services and facilities are coming on line this year, including doorstep recycling and green waste services for all street properties, and pilots of estate recycling and kitchen waste collection.
This has helped recycling rates, which languished at just 3.5% of rubbish under Labour, to more than quadruple to 14.7% in May. Now the Lib Dem council is hoping to reach 18% by next March.
Sustainability Executive Member, Bridget Fox, says;
"Labour left recycling in Islington in a real state, and we've had to build the service up pretty much from scratch. We've made huge progress, not least because of local resident's willingness to get involved in recycling. There's still a long way to go to reach our ambitious targets, but we will carry on investing and working to make Islington a cleaner, greener borough."
