Cllr Bridget Fox has welcomed the Mayor of London adopting Liberal Democrat policies to fight fare evasion. Bridget and her Liberal Democrat colleagues at the Greater London Assembly have been campaigning for more ticket inspectors and higher fines for fare evaders. Mayor Ken Livingstone this week announced that fines for fare evasion are doubling to £20 from next month and the number of bus inspectors is rising to 290.
Bridget says:
"This move is very welcome. The Mayor has listened to our demands. Ken Livingstone raised bus fares at the beginning of the year instead of tackling fare evasion first - which costs Transport for London as much each year as the fare increase will raise.
"Fare dodging hits the pockets of law-abiding commuters who pay extra fare increases to make up for those who get something for nothing. Now the Mayor needs to target persistent offenders, and sort out the problem of fare evasion on bendy buses and the oyster card readers that don't work. Millions of pounds is lost each year to people who are breaking the law. Cracking down on continual fare evasion could crack down on fare rises."
