The assault on staff at the SPAR on New North Road on Tuesday this week is the latest in a series of incidents that have left local residents angry that Labour's policing plans have not yet given them the promised bobbies on the beat.
The SPAR, on the border of Canonbury & St Peters, was closed on Tuesday. Such was the seriousness of the incident that both police and ambulance were in attendance, the road closed and the 271 bus diverted. Labour's 'Safer Neighbourhoods' teams only cover half the wards in Islington, with Canonbury, St Peters and Barnsbury among those that are currently missing out.
Lib Dem campaigner & local resident Bridget Fox says,
"A regular police presence could have prevented this terrible incident - and made local residents feel safer in their neighbourhood.
"Islington residents have already paid twice for extra police - through taxes to Gordon Brown and to Ken Livingstone - yet much of our borough is still missing out.
"I want to see the Government scrap their expensive, unproven ID card scheme and put the money into more police for Islington now. Local residents should not have to wait any longer."
