Claire Rayner visited St Barts Hospital and the Breast Cancer Screening
Centre in Barnsbury last Thursday (7 April) as part of Bridget Fox's
campaign to improve health services in Islington.
Bridget and Claire joined Sarah Ludford MEP and Wendy Mead, leader of
the
Save St Barts campaign, at the hospital to remind residents of Labour's
broken promise to re-open the Accident and Emergency department.
Claire Rayner said:
"I feel angry and betrayed at what Labour has done to our NHS."
She also attacked the Labour government for ignoring the Royal
Commission
set up by Tony Blair's government to look into long term care for the
elderly. The Commission recommended that all nursing and personal care
should be free - a policy that Labour ignored but which is now a key
plank
of the Liberal Democrat manifesto.
"It is disgraceful that Labour ignored the recommendations of the Royal
Commission which was a cross-party and independent body set up by the
government itself," said Claire Rayner
Bridget Fox added:
"I was delighted to welcome Claire back to Islington. She is one of
many
formers Labour supporters who are backing the Liberal Democrats because
of
our positive policies to provide free personal care to all who need it
and
to speed up diagnosis and treatment of life-threatening diseases."
"I was especially proud to show Claire the Breast Cancer Centre which
is an
excellent example of Islington Council and the local health service
working
together to improve services to local residents."
