Islington residents found out that they were better off than residents in neighbouring boroughs this week, as their Lib Dem controlled Council (recently judged the fastest improving Council in the country by the independent Audit Commission) announced that its Council
Tax WILL remain lower than neighbouring Harringey and Camden - both Labour controlled.
The Evening Standard, in a feature comparing Council Tax across London, Lib Dem Islington whilst reminding
voters about Labour's past. "Islington is in the bottom third of the council tax league table - which it topped only six years ago [ when Labour ran the council ]."
Local campaigner Bridget Fox said; "We are very proud of the fact that residents are getting better services and paying less
for them since the Lib Dems took power. Cutting Council Tax was one of our key council manifesto pledges".
The statement over Council Tax came in the week that the independent Association of Local Government warned that a financial
black hole for local councils had only been avoided because the Government had issued a pre-election fix.
Bridget added; "The Council tax is unfair and is not working. The Liberal Democrats are the only mainstream political party that
would introduce the much fairer Local Income Tax".
