Liberal Democrat Councillor Emma Gowers has won £250 for Whizz-kids by wearing a pedometer for three weeks.
All the councillors and staff at Islington Council were invited to take part in a competition to raise awareness of the importance of walking for health. They all recorded the number of steps they took for three weeks and prizes were awarded for councillors and employees who took the most steps, as well as those who commuted furthest on foot and bicycle.
Emma Gowers won the prize for being the most active Councillor. Over the course of the three weeks she took 242,275 steps averaging out at 16,152 a day.
Emma said "Health is a really important issue in Islington and walking is a really easy way to keep fit and stay active.
"Having a pedometer is great because it tells you how far you've been. It's amazing because it really motivates you to walk further to accomplish your 10,000 steps for the day."
Councillor Bridget Fox, Executive Member for Sustainability said
"Emma is really leading by example. Walking is the best way to cut pollution while seeing more of our beautiful borough."
