An extra £432,000 for childrens social services is being promised in this year's Council budget. The extra money will provide £236,000 for additional children's social workers, and £200,000 to provide more staff and support for children in care in school and further education.
The increases will be approved at tonight's (24th February) Budget Council meeting, at which the Liberal Democrats are also tabling a motion about the council's work to improve childrens services and reaffirming it's vision to create a borough where every child has the best start in life.
Cllr James Kempton, Executive Member for Children's Services, said: "We've made real progress in improving standards for vulnerable children in Islington: improving the health and education of kids in care, working to increase fostering and adoption, and supporting young people leaving care. But there's still much more to do, and this additional funding will make a real difference to the already fractured lives of the most vulnerable in our community."
Cllr Carol Powell, speaking on children's social services in the meeting, said: "Throughout the nineties, Islington's record on children was appalling: whether it be failing schools or weak social service provision. The Liberal Democrats are hauling the borough out of that legacy, and I am proud of the immense progress we have already made. We know there is much more to be done, but I believe that we can and will ensure a better future for all the children of Islington."
