Islington Council is this year pumping an extra £2.07 million in to better maintained streets, pavements and street furniture, more street cleaning, additional refuse collection, and action against anti-social behaviour.
Cllr Bridget Fox, Executive Member for Sustainability, says: "This is a huge investment, and excellent news for residents, who made it clear in the budget consultation that street cleanliness and waste management is a big priority for them. The new street cleaning and additional waste collections, combined with our extended bulky waste collections and new recycling collections, will do much to make our beautiful borough an even cleaner, greener, and generally better place to live."
The extra services that the money is providing include: New steam cleaning to get rid of oil and chewing gum from streets New street sweeping machines to be extended throughout the borough Additional refuse collection on housing estates and extra night-time collections Doubling the number of free bulky waste collections street residents receive to 6 per year, and enabling Homes for Islington to mainstream bulky collections on estates Continuing the successful schemes to combat graffitti and flytipping
The money is in addition to the extra £730,000 dedicated to recycling.
