Recycling in Islington is set to get a boost today, thanks to the Liberal Democrat council executive today approving an extra £730,000 on expanding recycling in the borough. This follows their success in increasing recycling rates in Islington three fold since taking control of Islington Council.
The funds, which are part of the council's annual budget, will pay for rolling out the popular mixed recycling collections across the borough; this allows residents to recycle plastic and cardboard as well as paper, cans and bottles in their green recycling boxes. The council will also be creating a state of the art education centre, in conjunction with the Science Museum, at the recently opened new Waste Recycling Centre, providing an excellent resource for schools and the wider community.
Cllr Bridget Fox, Executive Member for Sustainability and Conservation, says:
"Reaching our 10% target for recycling is an excellent achievement, but there is still much more to be done. Extending the co-mingled collections to every street in the borough will be a major step forward, increasing the amount recycled as well as making it far easier and more convenient for residents. This, with other recent innovations such as the Hornsey Street Recycling Centre and the subsidised home composters, will help us create the clean, green borough residents deserve."
