The huge blaze that destroyed warehouses on the Caledonian Road last week is another reminder of how vital our fire cover is in this crowded borough. Two engines from Upper Street were needed as well as other engines from neighbouring stations.
We need a fire service that is equipped to deal with these major fires AND provide cover for the many smaller fires that affect our lives and homes. Islington has an average of 33 fires a week, and at least 14 serious fires, that's the the third highest number of serious fires in London.
This latest fire underlines that it is madness to take away one fire engine from Upper Street and another from Clerkenwell as the London Fire Authority proposes. I am grateful to everyone who has signed the petition campaigning against this dangerou change - the Council has already sent in objections to the plans, and I will keep fighting for proper fire cover for Islington.
