Islington has been named as one of only four Opportunity Boroughs in London by the Government. This is recognition of Islington's commitment to supply new housing.
Islington has been set targets for housing supply in the London Plan and are on target to exceed this in the next five years.
There is a shortage of housing in the borough and the Council is responding to this problem. As an opportunity borough Islington will be building more housing of a high quality and good design.
Councillor Jyoti Vaja, Executive member for Housing and Community Safety
"We have recognised the need for affordable housing in the borough and are working with the government, the Mayor of London and developers to provide it. We have already done so much but over the coming years there will be sites specially selected and chosen to be turned into real opportunities!"
Councillor Bridget Fox, Executive Member for Sustainability
"This is a remarkable achievement for an inner city borough. This recognition from the government shows that Islington Lib Dems are committed to doing more to deliver affordable housing than any similar local authority while protecting our precious green space. We have always known this to be the case but formal recognition is always welcome."
As an Opportunity Borough Islington Council will develop an ongoing relationship with the Government who will assist Islington in making the most of available land.
