Dear Editor
You are right to report that too many homes standing unused and empty is a problem across London (Pg 2 14th October). Here in Islington, however, I am glad that the Liberal Democrat council is working hard to make the most of our housing stock. For example, in the past it sometimes took the Council as long as six months to re-let empty properties to new tenants; we now re-decorate homes and let them to new tenants within a matter of weeks.
We also offer support to private landlords on re-letting homes quickly, including grants to renovate empty properties, and other help and advice.
I am delighted that our good work in this area has been recognised by others, and the Council has just won a major national award for its work in this area from the Empty Homes Agency.
As Liberal Democrats we would also like Councils like Islington to have further powers to bring empty homes back into use - one of the many ways that Liberal Democrats in Parliament want to give local Councils the freedom and power to tackle key local issues.
Yours sincerely,
Councillor Euan Cameron,
Board Director Homes for Islington
