Liberal Democrats on Islington Council have attacked Royal Mail bosses for providing a worse postal delivery service than ever to local residents.
Figures released by Royal Mail show that although there has been a slight improvement in the number of first class letters delivered on time the next day in Islington, this is still well below the target. All Islington's postcode areas failed to meet the minimum target of delivering 92.5% of first class letters the next day.
Nationally, the Royal Mail failed to meet a single one of its performance targets, its performance in April-June was the worst for three years and more than 1.7 million letters are not delivered.
In July delivery figures appear to have gone into reverse with Royal Mail figures showing Islington in the bottom 20 postcode areas nationally for guaranteeing next day delivery of first class letters and a 5% fall in performance compared to May.
Liberal Democrat councillor Bridget Fox, said:
"Unfortunately, this news will come as no surprise to Islington residents. The poor postal service is fast moving up the list of local grumbles, especially when the move to a single daily delivery was meant to improve the situation.
"For the last three years customers have been paying higher prices for a declining service. Islington residents just want to get the service they pay for. No one wants a situation where £50 million is spent in compensation, rather than invested to improve the quality of service Royal Mail provides.
"Liberal Democrats will now be pushing Royal Mail bosses to explain why we seem to be going backwards, not forwards with postal deliveries in Islington."
