Liberal Democrats have revealed that Islington has one of the 20 worst postal services in England.
Islington and North London was the 10th worst performing postcode areas according to April-December 2003 figures released by the watchdog for postal services, Postwatch. Only 86.3% of 1st class mail posted in North London arrived the next day, which according to Postwatch "shows that customers living in this area have suffered a consistently poor level of performance".
Liberal Democrat Bridget Fox said:
"Residents frequently complain to us that letters don't arrive on time or get lost and this can cause chaos. A reliable post service shouldn't be too much to ask for. I know that the Royal Mail has had problems with strikes over the past year but that shouldn't be an excuse for letting customers down.
"The Lib Dems have joined with local residents to campaign against post office closures. Unfortunately both the Labour Government and The Post Office had already made their minds up.
"Now it seems not only do local residents have to travel further to find their local post office and when they get there the queue's out of the door, they can't even be sure their post will get their on time, if at all!
"Post services are an essential public service - the Government must not wipe its hands of this growing problem."
THE FACTS
According to Postwatch nearly 60% of the 14.5 million letters lost every year are simply delivered to the wrong house and Royal Mail pays out some £11 million a year to compensate customers for lost mail.
