Islington Liberal Democrat campaigner Bridget Fox has warned kind-hearted local residents to be on their guard after a fake charity advertisement was spotted being delivered in the borough.
The flyers - from 'Helpline UK' - ask people to put out their old clothing and other goods for collection, implying that they go to help young families with children. But the small print admits 'Helpline UK' is not a charity. In fact the goods are simply taken for resale as a commercial operation. The Advertising Standards Authority has already ruled against Helpline UK's previous leaflet after complaints.
Commenting on the leaflets she found distributed in Canonbury, Bridget Fox said:
"I have asked Islington Council's Trading Standards section to investigate this latest scam from this fake charity.
"Helpline UK is preying on the generous nature of Islington residents for their own commercial gain.
"If people have clothing to spare there are much better ways to put it to good use. People can support local charity shops, give the clothing to drop-in centres like Marys at St Mary's church on Upper Street, or put them in their council green box for reuse and recycling."
