New and improved lighting is being installed in and around the Bemerton Estate to create safe and well-lit paths through the estate to get to the local bus stops and rail stations.
The pilot project "Safer Routes to Public Transport" aims to make it easier and safer for local residents to use public transport and work on the improvements is set to finish by the end of March.
At the end of last year residents were consulted about issues over safety and security which prevent them using public transport. Many residents are often afraid to leave their houses at night over concerns about their safety and that one of the problems was poor lighting. Feedback clearly showed that these simple improvements could make a major difference to their lives, helping residents feel safer, and encouraging them to use buses, tubes and trains.
Local Liberal Democrat councillor Carol Powell said:
"These new lights will be a real boost for the estate. They help residents feel safer and more secure. But we also hope it will encourage people to get out and about more by making the use of local public transport easier."
Bridget Fox, Executive Member for Sustainability said:
"We know that better lighting helps to cut crime and make the local area feel safer which is why we're investing in upgrading all lighting across Islington over the next five years.
"The whole of Islington will be getting better modern lights under an ambitious scheme launched this year by the Lib Dems. The new lights will also use over 90 per cent energy from renewable sources as part of our commitment to greening Islington."
