Cutting Blue Badge fraud

April 23, 2004 12:00 AM

Lib Dem Islington council has been working jointly with the police to crack down on the black market for blue badges. They have run a number of successful joint enforcements with the police around the Arsenal stadium during matchday controls, which resulted in eleven illegal disabled badges being seized and several arrests. The council is also developing proposals with police and disability groups to improve the service to genuine blue badge holders and prevent fraud, which will be revealed next month. Liberal Democrat Bridget Fox, Executive Member for Sustainability said: "We know that there is a problem with blue badge fraud, as there is across London and that's why it's important to get tough with those who illegally use blue badges. Fraudulent badges are not only unfair but also cause problems for genuine badge holders. "In the long term we're also consulting disability groups and the police about how we can improve our service and clamp down on fraud."
