New Childrens Spokesperson Annette Brooke MP visited three early years places in Lib Dem-run Islington - nationally recognised as a leader of good practice on 31 March. Islington North PPC Cllr Laura Willoughby, Education spokesperson Cllr James Kempton, and Chair of the Early Years Partnership Cllr Emma Gowers showed Annette round three venues with innovative plans. Ambler primary school will host one of the first wave of Childrens Centres, bringing together educational, health and other help together on one site. Archway Early Years Centre has a very modern new building which has successfully improved the educational outcomes of its children, and also helped to regenerate the surrounding area. However difficulties in the funding arrangements put in place by the Government mean that local parents are having difficulty taking places at it. New River Green Early Years Centre is at the heart of a difficult housing estate, and has pioneered the wider involvement of parents in early years centres. It has been designated by the Government as an Early Excellence Centre. Annette Brooke MP said "I was extremely impressed with the centres I visited. It has long been Liberal Democrat policy to invest more in early years education and to give children the best start in life, and I hope we can introduce more children's centres nationwide. It was heartening to see the excellent high quality work in Islington."
