Islington Liberal Democrats have welcomed the news this week that Emily Thornberry has been selected as Labour's general election candidate for Islington South & Finsbury. Ms Thornberry was the third choice candidate to stand as Chris Smith MP's replacement. Labour members in Islington were forced to select Emily Thornberry following the withdrawal of both their high profile Leader of the Opposition on the Council, Mary Creagh, and local GLA member, Meg Hillier who is now the prospective Labour candidate for Hackney South & Shoreditch. Emily Thornberry has the unenviable record of having already lost comprehensively to Liberal Democrat candidate Bridget Fox in May 2002 in the Council elections. Both were candidates in Barnsbury ward where they live. But Bridget Fox polled 1127 votes while Emily Thornberry only secured 600. Liberal Democrat Council Leader Steve Hitchins said: "With the General Election widely expected to be just over a year away, I am surprised that Labour have chosen someone who has never won an election in Islington and worse has already lost one to Bridget Fox. "I am convinced that this time will be the Liberal Democrats' turn in Islington. The Prime Minister is very unpopular locally and people are tired of both Chris Smith and Jeremy Corbyn."
