Islington's Liberal Democrat councillors have agreed a package of improvements to the Chapel Market area, Islington totalling £600,000. The improvements are part of the second phase of the Chapel Market Heritage Economic Regeneration Scheme (HERS). The scheme give grants for repairing and improving shopfronts and other environmental improvements. The second phase of the Chapel Market HERS is a partnership between English Heritage and the Council until March 2006. 11 shopfronts have been renewed in the first phase of works. The improvements to shopfronts are just part of an overall improvement package being implemented by the Liberal Democrat council in the Chapel Market area. New lighting has already been fitted, the electricity supply for market stalls has been renewed and road surfaces and pavements have been upgraded. New paving is also planned for Godson Street, White Lion Street and Penton Street. Councillor Bridget Fox, Executive Member for Sustainability, said: "Chapel Market is one of the things that makes Islington unique. "The Council wants to do all it can to ensure that the market has a key role in the future of the Angel town centre. "These improvements should make it an even more pleasant experience while preserving the character of the local conservation area."
