Islington Liberal Democrats have agreed to introduce a total lorry ban in the Tufnell Park area following requests from local residents. Councillors at the North Area committee meeting on Tuesday 3rd February agreed to spend £20,000 on banning lorries over 7.5 tonnes from the mainly residential roads which have facilities for both younger and older people in them. The area is considered unsuitable for use by large or heavy vehicles. The effects of lorry and bus vibrations on homes in Tufnell Park Road and how they can be minimised will also be investigated by the Council. This follows a 400 strong petition to the Council last summer from local residents. Chair of North Area committee and local Junction ward councillor, Euan Cameron, (Liberal Democrat) said: "The consultation exercise the Council carried out late last year showed overwhelming resident support for a lorry ban in the triangle between Junction Road, Tufnell Park Road and Holloway Road. I am pleased the Council has been able to respond so quickly. "The Council is now also working with residents to see how we can reduce the impact of lorries in Tufnell Park Road." Local ward councillor for St.George's ward, Angela Brook, said: "Residents have been asking for a heavy lorry ban to reduce noise and vibration levels to local homes, especially in Tufnell Park Road. "Heavy and large lorries also damage local roads and often obstruct narrow residential roads." FACTS The proposed area for the lorry ban is bounded by Tufnell Park Road, Holloway Road and Junction Road. Holloway Road is not included in the scheme as it is part of the Transport for London road network. Junction Road is not included because it is a borough distributor road. Tufnell Park Road was not recommended for inclusion because it is a local distributor road and is a bus route. The Police also stated they would support the inclusion of Tufnell Park Road in the lorry ban area. ? The lorry ban area will be indicated by illuminated 7.5 tonne weight restriction signs on lamp columns at every point of entry into the zone.
