?Stop Crossrail dithering and start digging?

February 17, 2004 12:00 AM

Islington Liberal Democrats have attacked the Labour government's decision to delay the publication of the Montague Report on Crossrail and postpone the decision on building the long-awaited project. Crossrail will provide a high-speed link between east and west London through a new cross-London rail tunnel. The link will ensure that passengers do not have to have the inconvenience and extra time required problems of changing on to the tube to get across town to mainline railway termini in west or east London. Islington Councillor Bridget Fox, Executive Member for Sustainability (Liberal Democrat), said: "The Government must get on with getting Crossrail built. Successive Labour and Tory governments alike have dithered and delayed, terrified by the Treasury mandarins who are still blocking public money for essential transport projects. "Crossrail would make a massive difference to cross-London journey times for Islington residents with the planned stop at Farringdon." Councillor Terry Stacy, local Liberal Democrat candidate for the Greater London Assembly, said: "For once let us have some real political leadership, and get this vital rail link through the heart of the capital built as soon as possible. Crossrail will relieve pressure on a hugely overcrowded underground network. "Any Londoners over 40 can remember this project being talked about when they were kids. They shouldn't have to wait until they're pensioners before it is a reality."
