Islington's Liberal Democrat councillors have launched a campaign to extend the proposed East London Line to Caledonian Road & Barnsbury. The first phase of the East London Line extension is due to stop at Highbury & Islington. But pressure from the Liberal Democrats has shown that it is possible technically to extend the line one more stop to Caledonian Road & Barnsbury as the trains will run on from Highbury & Islington to a depot outside Kings Cross. Barnsbury Liberal Democrat councillor Bridget Fox, who is also responsible for transport on the council, said: "This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to put Caledonian Road & Barnsbury on the tube map. "An East London Line stop here would be a massive boost for the area and improve links with other difficult-to-reach parts of London. "We are now working with Lynne Featherstone and our Liberal Democrat colleagues on the Greater London Assembly to try and make this a reality for Islington residents. For years, this part of Islington has borne the brunt of rail works - it's only right we should get improved connections as well"
