Traffic chaos on Holloway Road and Upper Street

October 6, 2003 12:00 AM

Lib Dem prospective Candidate for Islington South, Bridget Fox, says it's time for action, not excuses from Mayor Ken Livingstone. She's demanding a swift response to tackle the traffic chaos which has seen Holloway Road, Highbury Corner and Upper Street grinding to a halt in recent days. As a major London trunk route, managing these roads and keeping traffic flowing freely is the responsibility of Transport for London (TfL), which is chaired by Mayor Ken Livingstone. Bridget Fox said: "Islington residents want safe, quiet residential streets and efficient traffic on our main roads. With this traffic chaos we are getting the worst of both worlds - tailbacks on the A1, late-running buses, and frustrated drivers rat-running through side streets. This is just the situation congestion charging is supposed to avoid. "Transport for London have give us one excuse after another, from wrong phasing on traffic lights to failure to co-ordinate with contractors. It is Ken's job to ensure these problems are sorted out and that traffic can move freely on London's trunk roads. "
