Local Canonbury Liberal Democrats are today welcoming the news that the Canonbury CPZ has been given the final go-ahead. Lib-Dem's on Islington council this week gave its final verdict on whether to proceed with the much wanted CPZ for Canonbury area. The CPZ was backed unanimously by the Lib Dems on the Executive and it will now only be a matter of time before residents will see the CPZ in action. Since the Lib Dems took control of Islington council they have worked hard to keep their pledge to roll out CPZs across the borough where local residents want them in a bid to make Islington's streets and roads safer. Among the other schemes now in place are two new 20mph zones in Amwell and Barnsbury, more safe routes to schools and the "Walking bus" school initiative, helping children get to school safely and aiming to promote alternatives to using the car. On top of this good news North Area Committee next week are due to agree another new and much anticipated 20mph zone at Dartmouth Hill. Councillor Jonathan Dearth, Lib Dem ward member for Canonbury said: "This is really great news for the residents of Canonbury - they'll be delighted! The Lib Dems, alongside local residents, have backed this CPZ all the way and it'll make a huge difference to the area." Councillor Bridget Fox, Executive member for Sustainability added: "With the backing of residents we're rolling out CPZs across the borough as fast as we possibly can. It's not always easy and I understand there are many residents who would also like to see one in their area. But we're committed to our programme of CPZ's and we're putting money and resources into getting this done. "As a Lib Dem council it's one of our priorities to make our roads safer and reduce the impact of traffic and we have the support of our residents. CPZs are just one of the many new and exciting ways we're making this happen."
