International Women's Day has a new meaning this week as the Liberal Democrats in Islington announce their Prospective parliamentary candidate for Islington North, local Councillor Laura Willoughby. This means that both the Liberal Democrats Parliamentary Candidates are women as is their local GLA candidate and all three are Islington Councillors. Cllr Laura Willoughby - Islington North, Cllr Bridget Fox - Islington South and Finsbury and Cllr Sarah Teather - GLA North-East. Cllr Laura Willoughby was recently selected by an overwhelming vote of local members. Laura was the Parliamentary Candidate in Islington North at the last General Election in 2001. She is a councillor in the constituency has represented the Highbury area for nearly five years. Laura is the executive member for Communities on the council, taking responsibility for community involvement, regeneration, equalities and sports and arts. She lives on Blackstock Road. On her selection Laura said: "I am pleased to be given the opportunity to stand in Islington North again, it is my home and I am dedicated to improving and representing the area. "The Labour party have consistently failed residents of Islington, by taking control of the council we have started to put that right at a local level - I want to do the same nationally." Cllr Steve Hitchins, Leader of the Liberal Democrats in Islington said " Laura is a dedicated councillor and will make a terrific MP. It is important for residents in Islington to have a strong MP who will take up local issues and has the support of her party.
