Islington Lib Dems have condemned the Labour Government for their plans to scrap free travel for pensioners and the disabled. Lib Dem PPC for Islington South, Bridget Fox, is leading the fight in defending and extending the "Freedom Pass" which gives pensioners and the disabled free travel. The Labour Government's Commission for Integrated Transport has recommended slashing subsidised fare schemes like the Freedom Pass, which entitles pensioners and the disabled to free travel, by half, down to just 50% subsidy. Councillor Bridget Fox is Vice-Chair of the Association of London Government's Transport and Environment Committee who are working to safeguard the operation of the Freedom Pass in London. Despite the cut backs that the Government are recommending, the ALG recently decided not only to defend the travel pass but are extending it further, to cover men aged between 60-65 and extending the right to use the pass at peak time for people with disabilities. Lib Dem PPC for Islington South, Bridget Fox says: "The Freedom pass is invaluable. It allows older people to continue to lead full lives and it helps reduce traffic. I am shocked and angry that the Labour Government could consider cutting it back. "I am proud to say that we are not just fighting to save it but will also be extending it so that it can benefit even more people."
