Lib Dem councillors have agreed to implement their pledge to upgrade all street lighting in the Borough over the next five years. At a meeting of the Council's Executive Councillors will commit to a contract under a PFI scheme to upgrade the street lights. This scheme will be the fastest and most cost-effective way of implementing the pledge. Cllr Bridget Fox, Executive Member for Sustainability, who will present the report, said "I am delighted that the Lib Dems are now delivering on another pledge we made to the electorate before the elections. "Everyone in Islington will benefit from this improved street lighting, which will make it easier and safer for residents to get around at night. "Improved street lighting will help to tackle crime. I hope that it will reduce people's fear of crime and enable them to be out after dark. "In addition research shows that improved street lighting cuts down on road accidents. "I am particularly pleased that the new streetlights will be using 100% Green Energy, fulfilling our commitment to minimise our impact on the environment."
