The spine of Islington, the A1 road, will be at the centre of a dramatic transformation under exciting and ambitious new plans revealed by the Lib Dems. The Lib Dems want to transform Islington by giving the A1 a complete facelift, changing the whole streetscape, look, feel, use and operation of this road. The community will be put at the heart of these plans, which the Lib Dems hope will have a lasting visible benefit for the whole community and reinforce their "One Islington" vision. Improvements to the A1 could include things like:
Removing unnecessary clutter on the streets like old railings
Improving street cleaning
Change the traffic flow at both the Archway and Highbury Corner to improve pedestrian access to green space
Improve the street scene by better enforcement, working with our partners to crack down on unlicensed street traders, street crime and other public nuisances
Lib Dems revealed their plans at a recent Executive meeting and will now asking residents for their views on the proposals as part of the wider consultation on next year's budget which will be going to all Area Committees before Christmas. All parties have welcomed the vision and even the Labour Leader called them "exciting". Liberal Democrat Steve Hitchins, Leader of Islington council said: "The Lib Dems have already started turning the council around after years of Labour failure; now we want to create something special which everyone can look to as a shining example of what Islington is all about. "The A1 runs through the heart of Islington so revamping this benefit everyone in Islington. We'll be working with all those involved, the local community, businesses, the police and the Mayor of London, to make this happen. "It's not just about transforming the A1, dramatic improvements here will have a knock-on effect across the rest of Islington."
