Why we need a safer Angel Crossing

November 24, 2003 12:00 AM

46,000 people leave Angel Tube Station every day. The pedestrian crossing outside the station is used by commuters, residents and shoppers to cross between Camden Passage, Chapel Market, the N1 Centre, and all the other shops and offices in the area. Sadly, crossing the road is neither easy nor safe: The small size of the island in the middle of the crossing can put pedestrians in danger when it gets crowded at busy times The length of time pedestrians have to wait before they are allowed to cross means some people are tempted to 'jump the lights' by running out in front of traffic Bad signal timings mean buses often block the crossing when pedestrians are supposed to cross. There have been countless times when I've been out and about in Angel and seen pedestrians in near misses with the many buses and cars that go through this busy junction. This road and crossing is looked after by Transport for London (TfL) which is the responsibility of the Mayor of London. It's time for TfL and the Mayor to listen to local pedestrians. They should review the whole junction as soon as possible to make the crossing safer and easier to use for pedestrians. You can help by signing our petition. The petition will be presented to the London Mayor, who is responsible for the crossing through Transport for London. &nbsp
