Liberal Democrats in London North East GLA constituency have picked Islington Councillor, Sarah Teather to be their prospective candidate for the GLA elections in 2004. London North East constituency covers the three Boroughs of Islington, Hackney and Waltham Forest.
Sarah said "I am delighted to have been chosen to fight this seat for the Liberal Democrats. Local people feel let down by Labour, locally and nationally, and Ken has failed to deliver the change Londoners were promised. Despite all the hype and Ken's glossy posters, has anyone noticed any improvement since Ken was elected? And what happened to Meg Hillier?
"There are real issues facing the people of London North East, and its seemed that no-one has been fighting our corner. From Ken's crazy plans to build 50,000 more homes without any money to pay for infrastructure, to the crisis in London hospitals and rise in violent crime. The people of Islington, Hackney and Waltham Forest deserve better.
"When Paul Fox stood here last time in 2000 we were in a strong second place, but now we overwhelmingly control Islington Council and share power in Waltham Forest. People are looking for an alternative and they trust Lib Dems to deliver."
Chair of Islington Liberal Democrats, Dominic Mathon said: "Sarah will be an outstanding and energetic representative for the people of London North East. She is already a winner in Islington, and has earned a reputation as a committed hardworking councillor in Hillrise. She is the right candidate to beat Meg Hillier in the GLA elections in 2004."
Sarah Teather is an Islington councillor in Hillrise Ward, and is Deputy Executive Member on Sustainability and Vice Chair of the Sustainability Scrutiny Committee. She works for Macmillan Cancer Relief as a Policy Analyst, advising the charity on health and social policy. Sarah also sits on the Lib Dem national policy committee.
