Green fingered enthusiasts descended on Highbury Fields armed with a thousand flower bulbs to plant in the park to raise awareness for Breakthrough Breast Cancer. Despite heavy rain Councillors Bridget Fox, Prospective Parliamentray Candidate for Islington South and Laura Willoughby braved the mud to join others in getting their hands dirty for charity. The crocus forms part of the charity's logo and the bulbs will be flowering to coincide with a host of sponsership activities around Mother's Day in 2003. The crocuses will also make a welcome sight come springtime in the 29 acre open space, Islington's largest public park. Councillor Bridget Fox, Executive member for sustainability said "We are delighted to help raise awareness of this charity which has made great strides into breast cancer research. The flowers will be a welcome addition of colour and interest in just a few months time when the charity's sponsored Crocus Walk takes place. We've already made improvements to parks and open spaces across this borough who were suffering from years of neglect. Our parks are becoming safer, cleaner and smarter under the Liberal Democrats."
