Provisional examination results from our schools are showing a real improvement in performance. The provisional GCSE results show the percentage of pupils gaining 5 or more A* - C grades increasing from 28.79% in 2001 to 32.79% in 2002. Cllr James Kempton said: "These are Islington's best-ever set of GCSE results. I am delighted that the improvements over recent years are accelerating with this impressive 4% leap in performance. We always said that this was the year we would start to see the impact of the Council's partnership with CEA@Islington in raising standards. There is still a great deal more work to be done and we have set CEA@Islington very demanding targets. However, this is evidence that real progress is being made and gives everyone confidence that our secondary schools will continue to improve. This year we have agreed with Headteachers that individual schools results will not be published until the final results are available, probably towards the end of September. Many students now take vocational courses and other examinations whose results are not yet available. Our experience last year was that these significantly improved the results in some schools. The provisional A Level results have also improved with the overall pass rate increasing from 69% in 2001 to 80% this year. The percentage of passes with A - C grades remains the same as last year at 35%. I am delighted that all the hard work of students and teachers in our schools is beginning to show such positive results and I am sure you will join me in congratulating them all."
