This yearís overall A-Level results for the four Islington secondary schools* with sixth-forms are closer to the national average than last year and are a key indicator in the battle to improve education in the Borough. There are 80% A to E passes this year compared with 69% in 2001. The A-C passes ñ 35% ñ remain the same as last year. However, information is still awaited about a number of results and this is expected to increase the overall percentages slightly. Councillor James Kempton, Islingtonís Lib Dem Executive Member for Regeneration and Education, said: ëThis is good news - all the students who have worked so hard to gain their A-Levels and I wish them luck as they take these qualifications on to college or jobs. We should not under-estimate today's achievements which are testament to the hard work and dedication of students and teachers. " ëIt's excellent news that there is an increase in the overall pass rate, yet another indication that the quality of education provided by our schools continues to get better. I know we have set some ambitious targets but today's results show that we are on the right track.í Futher info Overall passes: 2002 2001 Total of entries 84 205 A-C grades 35% 35% A-E grades 80% 69% The four Islington secondary schools with sixth-forms are: - Central Foundation School ñ there were no A-Level entries this year. - Highbury Fields School and Highbury Grove School, which work as a sixth-form consortium known as Highbury Sixth. - St Aloysius College.
