Labour playing gutter politics

April 19, 2002 12:00 AM

Labour has turned on the heat in this election with a volly of leaflets attacking inividual councillors and accusing the Lib Dems of sleaze. Cllr Steve Hitchins, Leader of islington council responded by saying: "This is the politics of the gutter. We have seen it all before. It is negative campaigning at its very worst". "The Labour group has wasted thousands and thousands of pounds of public money in getting all manner of public investigators carry out investigations into the activities of the Liberal Democrat council. To date none of these have been substantiated". "The LibDems deny categorically ever having received any money from Bernie Ecclestone1, Lakshmi Mittal2, Paul Drayson3, or BAE Systems4. The LibDems also deny running Doncaster Council". Backbench Labour MPs and union leaders alike are very concerned about Labour sleaze. TGWU general secretary Bill Morris urged Labour leaders to "get a grip" on the situation, and said: "A lot of people are worried that the Labour Party is abandoning its roots in favour of securing a relationship with business." Labour MP John McDonnell has accused the Prime Minister of bending Parliament's rules to help Labour's friends in the City win special voting rights.
