MEP wants young Londoners to represent UK at European Parliament

February 20, 2002 12:00 AM

Baroness Sarah Ludford, the Liberal Democrat MEP for London, wants young people at secondary school in London to take part in a programme in which they can meet young people from across Europe at the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

The Euroscola programme brings together 500 young people for a day at the European Parliament to discuss issues that affect them all. They break into groups of 100 each and then come together in the parliamentary chamber to debate and vote upon their findings.

Most Euroscola days are for those aged between 16 and 18 but there are also days organised for schoolchildren aged from 14 to 16. Sarah Ludford said:

"This is an excellent way to bring together young people of the same age from right across Europe. It will hopefully encourage some of them to think about studying and living in another EU Member State.

"And if their debates produce some dynamic proposals on how to improve the EU, so much the better."

The European Parliament is able to offer a small subsidy to make the day easier to participate in.Those interested in taking part should in the first instance contact Christine Burton at the UK Office of the European Parliament by writing to her at 2 Queen Anne's Gate, London, SW1H 9AA, telephoning 020 7227 4300, or emailing burton@europarl.eu.int.
