Everyone knows you canít go down to Nagís Head these days without a plague of cigarette sellers trying to force their illegal wares on passers by, including children. Cllr Doreen Scott, who lives round the corner and is a regular shopper at Nags Head says "These people are an absolute menace. They are very intimidating, sometimes violent and they bring the whole area down. Now they have appeared on Staveley Close and assaulted one of the residents. They must be stopped.î Your local Lib Dem councillors are fighting to get the problem taken seriously by the Police and Customs. Just before Christmas, thanks to an initiative by Cllr Ed Featherstone, there was a high-profile raid on the area, resulting in a number of illegal cigarette sellers being arrested. Customs officers will be keeping a dossier of photographs of repeat offenders to make sure they can be prosecuted. Still, thereís a lot more that needs to be done. We all know the resources of the police are stretched but local Lib Dem councillors are pushing for the raids to be done more regularly. ìWhile some people continue to buy cigarettes from them, these people will keep coming back" says Cllr Margot Dunn.
